Things That Can Be Done Only by Online Lessons

2020.05.09

Due to the coronavirus, we need to refrain from going out and various things have started to become online.

Online lessons were known as replacements of regular class lessons, and that they aren’t as good as regular lessons. But I think that we should not compare them and they are completely different things with both pros and cons.

I was learning ballet about 35 years ago. I saw the movie “All That Jazz”, found out how amazing modern ballet was, and immediately opened the door to a ballet classroom. I was able to take 2 modern ballet lessons per week, but I also had to take 2 classical ballet lessons as well.

Of course, the lessons were not completely at my speed, since I was only one of about 20 students there. The time that the teacher took just for me was only 5 minutes out of the entire 90 minutes lesson.

During the bar lessons, I tried to get through it by copying the movements of the person in front of me. But when I stood at the center there was nothing I could follow, so I felt awkward, just walking, scratching my head, and not knowing what I should be doing. I stopped learning ballet 4 years later because of my back pain, but I remember that it was fun, and I was looking forward to trying it again someday.

I was thinking of restarting when I have more time, after somebody takes over my position as president.

However, due to the coronavirus situation, the ballerina that I admire (Yukie Iwaki) has started lessons on Instagram. I decided to join.

The teacher said, “This is a basic class for those who eventually want to learn in real classrooms.” Still, I felt it was too much for me and there were many things that I didn’t understand.

However, if I don’t understand a part of the online lesson, I can search on the computer and find some videos that carefully explain what I wanted to know. I can also find videos that explain in a way that matches me.

Moreover, I can watch it repeatedly, so I can practice every day with the video.

I’m not confident that I can continue if I practice by myself, but I get encouraged at face to face online lessons twice a week. Seeing the teacher’s face and listening to their words motivates me.

I think I was able to participate in this lesson because it was held online. It was much easier and comfortable to join.

From this experience, I found out that there is a great potential for online lessons in various genres. I’ve been thinking that online ballet lessons would be impossible. I didn’t expect it to be this much fun!
