5月18日の日経新聞に元麹町中学校校長で現在は横浜創英中学・高校校長をされている工藤勇一氏の記事が掲載されていました。

　その記事の中で「学びとは本来、主体的なものだ。しかし日本の教育は子どもに手をかけすぎている。学力向上ばかりを唱え、そのためのサービスを与えることに躍起になり、結果として学習時間は伸び続け、最も大切な主体性・自主性を奪ってしまっている。サービスに慣れた子どもは次第に際限なくサービスを求めるようになる。大人の消費社会を映し出しているかのようだ」と言っています。

 　本当にそうだと思います。自分の中学生時代を思い返すと、学習塾は少なく、勉強は自分で参考書や問題集を買いに行って、それを使って自分で勉強していました。自分に合った参考書を探すだけでも大変でしたし、買ってみたら合わなかったという経験もしました。

　しかし、自分が塾で教えるようになると、問題集を私が選び、テストで点をとるために必要な教材を作り、覚え方まで教えていました。こうなると当然子ども達は与えられるのを待つようになります。

 　サービス過剰な教育で育った子どもが、社会に出て急に、主体的に仕事をしろと言われても戸惑うのは当然ですね。

 　時間に追われている時には主体的に学習する余裕は少なかったかもしれません。今もし時間に余裕があるのでしたら、与えられる物以外の、自分から知りたい事や学びたいと思うものを学ぶ良い機会なのではないでしょうか。

 　少し話は違うかもしれませんが、私は今ZoomやGoogleを使ってのオンラインでのコミュニケーションが急に必要となり、調べたり人に聞いたり、とても忙しいですが、短期間で成長したなぁと自分でも感心しています。

　使いながら、必要にせまられて学ぶと身に付きやすいですね。必要の無い時にZoomの講座を受けても身に付かなかったと思います。

 　英語の学習も使う場があって、必要があって学ぶことが必要ですね。今までの日本の英語学習には、その使う場面がなかったのです。オンラインで海外の英語しか共通の言語がないを人とコミュニケーションを取ろうとすると、分からないこと知りたいことがいっぱいでてくる。それを調べたり、聞いたりした身につければ良い学びとなります。

 　この時期に主体的学びについて考え、経験してみてはいかがでしょうか。

In that article, He pointed out something like this: “Learning should be self-directed. However, Japanese education is taking too much care of the children. They only focus on knowledge-based skills and provide too many services for that purpose. They end up just extending the studying time and lose the children’s independence, which should be the most important thing to grow. It’s reflecting the adults’ consumer society.”

I really agree with his words. Looking back on my junior high school days, there were not many cram schools, so we had to study by ourselves using reference books and workbooks that we purchased. Finding reference books that suit me was difficult, and I have experiences buying books that did not fit me.

However, when I started teaching at a cram school, I selected the workbooks, made the teaching materials that would work for better scores, and taught them how to memorize what they need. Obviously, this would make the children just wait until we bring things to them.

It is natural that a child raised by over-service education would be confused, when suddenly asked to go out into the world being told to work independently.

It might be difficult to learn independently when you are busy. If you have some spare time now, it is a good opportunity to learn what you are interested or curious about, other than what you are given.

This might be kind of off the topic, but I am in sudden need of communicating online, using tools like Zoom and Google. I am busy with researching and asking others, but I am proud of myself that I grew and learned in such a short period of time.

Skills become yours easily when you need while using it. I think I wouldn’t be able to use Zoom if it was not under necessity.

We can apply the same thing with studying English. There should be a place where the learners need to use English. Up until now, there was no such scene like that in Japanese education. When you meet someone online, and the only common language that you have is English, you will realize many things that you need to know and find out. Searching and asking people about those things will be a good lesson.

I suggest that we all experience independent, self-directed learning at this time.
